Interview with Shannan Albright, Author of the Knights of Excalibur Series

Where were you born and where do you call home?

I am a California girl born in Whittier. I’m now living in Las Vegas, NV

What is the name of your most recent book and if you had to sum it up in 30 or less words, what would you say?

The Kings Lady is my recent release. In a nutshell it’s about second chances, holding onto love with both hands and building a foundation of trust and respect.

I love reading the warnings on the blurbs for many books. If you could write a warning label for yourself as a person or an author, what would it say?

Warning: Approach writers study with extreme caution and avoid sudden movements. Do not feed the writer unless it is dark chocolate, nor stick your fingers through the doors opening. Amputation may occur.

What does your protagonist think about you? Would he or she want to hang out with you, the author?

I can see Gwen coming over for tea and a tarot reading, which would digress to chocolates, wine and discussing the…um the obvious merits of our partners in bed. J

Which character speaks the loudest, to you? Do any of them clamour to be heard over the others?

Gwen has always been the loudest voice of all of them. Since the day I started the series she was pacing in my head waiting for her book. She had a lot to say about how maligned she has been over the years and we both wanted to have the chance to get her side out there.

Do you have a specific writing style?

I have not really thought of having a particular style, others tell me my stories tend to be fast paced with a touch of snarky.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

There is more than one side to every story.

Where do you see yourself in five (5) years?

Writing wonderful books the readers want. I do have a business plan for acquiring an agent and hope for a book deal with one of the bigger publishing houses.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Somewhere warm like the Bahamas, where I can just walk out to the beach from my back door. Ah, heaven.

Is there an Author that you would really like to meet?

It would be JR Ward. I love the way that woman writes!

Do you prefer ebooks, paperbacks or hardcover?

I prefer paperbacks, but it’s easier for me to handle eBooks these days, since the Arthritis in my hands is getting worse, I would rather use them for writing than holding a book.

What can we expect from you in the future?  ie More books of the same genre? Books of a different genre?

More Paranormal, I have two different books I’m working on that are the first books in a series.  I am also working on a historical paranormal right now and if it’s received well there will be more historicals like it coming.

What do you think makes a book a really good/bestseller ?

Believable characters you can empathize with and a good end of chapter hooks help. But you really need to also have a solid, believable plot. Even in Paranormals there are rules than need to be followed and if you break them it needs to be explained in the book.

Have you ever suffered from a "writer’s block"? What did you do to get past the "block"?

I found having other WIP’s to work on helps to get me out of my head enough to figure out the problem. I also use oil painting to work out my stories so if one don’t do the trick the other will.

What was your favourite chapter (or part) to write and why?

I love writing the last third of the book, everything is coming to a head and things are looking grim. The action is fast and the build-up to the final confrontation is pretty intense. This is when surprises I’m not even aware of happens. Then I have to go back and put in some foreshadowing in the first half to make the change believable.

Have you ever read a book more than once?

I have to wait a few years before I can re-read a book I’ve already read. I have great recall and can remember the book in vivid detail after the first chapter.

What book are you currently reading and in what format (ebook/ paperback/ hardcover)?

Lover at Last by JR Ward and it’s eBook.

Are there any new Authors that have seized your interest and why?

Clare Ashgrove is awesome. Her series Curse of the Knights Templar is truly outstanding work. Caris Roane, in three words – Vampires in Kilts, her world building is incredible and draws you in right away.

Do you write under a pen name?

I write under Shannan Albright. I put my married name as my first and my maiden is my second. Thought it would be easier for me to remember and answer to this way.

What are your pet peeves?

Drivers who cut you off, people who have no consideration toward others, someone who lies to me.

Cats or dogs?

Both. I’m a huge animal lover.

White wine or red?

Rose or white.

Coffee or tea?

Coffee when I get up and tea in the afternoon.

Favourite food?

It’s a tossup between dark chocolate and cheesecake. Now if you put the two together….Oh, boy. But it HAS to be the dark semi-sweet chocolate.

Laptop or desktop for writing?

Laptop

Where and when do you prefer to do your writing?

Into my study.

One of your favourite quotes –

No matter where you go, there you are. From Buckaroo Bonsai

List 3 of your all time favourite books?

Gone with the Wind, Acheron, Dark Lover

List 3 of your all time favourite movies?

Young Frankenstein, All About Eve, Little Women

An actor you have a crush on –

Jay Bunyan from the CW Beauty and the Beast. Sigh, those abs…

What is a movie or TV show that you watched recently and really enjoyed?

Grim is addictive for me. Just love things that go bump in the night.

Growing up she was the dreamer in her family, something not always thought of as a positive thing. As a child she would draw and build stories around her pictures, so writing was a natural extension for her. Recently a family member told her that from now on she would encourage those dreamers she knew. Stating with hard work and focus dreams can come true. Shannan Albright is proof that dreaming can be a positive thing. When not writing she spends her time between oil painting and reading. She loves writing paranormal, urban fantasy, historical and fantasy romances because of the world building and rich characters she finds. She loves dark, edgy heroes and heroines overcoming impossible odds internal and external.

She is a "hopeful" Romantic who believes a healthy relationship built on respect and a strong partnership is the key to a happy ever after.

Interview w/ Krystal Shannan, Author or FINDING HOPE

Title: Finding Hope
Author:
Krystal Shannan
Series: Pool of Souls, #2
Genre: Paranormal Romance
Publisher: Self
Release Date: March 10th 2013
Length: 185 pages
Add To TBR Pile
Available At ARe | Amazon | B&N | Smashwords

Warning: The plot thickens with a passel of pissed off Olympians, but Ares and Aphrodite are in for a double dose of trouble! More Olympians join the mix in Finding Hope: Pool of Souls Book 2. A jewel addict, a kick-ass possibly-virgin huntress, and an insatiable ancient oracle are just a few. But don’t worry; Ares and Aphrodite are still front and center.

Addison Connelly has given up on men. She is disappointed yet again when her best friend tries to play matchmaker, and the match falls flat…or does it? Her friend knows all Addison needs is a chance, a little hope, and maybe a dropkick in the right direction. With an extra push from Aphrodite, will this lonely soul learn to trust again? Or will she run from the only man who could make her happy?

Adrian Colter, Nashville Police Detective and certifiable bachelor, puts his foot in his mouth in a big way when his roommate’s fiancé tries to match him up with her best friend. After making a horrible first impression, can he earn the trust of a woman who won’t speak a civil word to him?

Adrian isn’t the only one trying to earn the trust of a beautiful woman. While Ares fights to rebuild the trust he lost thousands of years ago with the Goddess of Love, his parents do what they do best —show off their greed and selfishness. Will he find the hope and forgiveness he so desperate seeks or will his parents destroy his chance at happiness?

So glad to be on your blog again! Hugs!

Where were you born and where do you call home?

I was born in Arlington, Texas, and still call the booming suburb home!

What or who inspired you to write?  And how long have you been writing?

Everything around me inspires me to tell a story. I can watch a movie, tv show, listen to music, look at artwork, the list goes on. Most of the time it’s a song or a painting that really inspires a neat idea. I have been writing stories down since second grade, but I’ve been trying seriously to become published since 2010. I published my first book in October of 2012.

What is the name of your most recent book and if you had to sum it up in 30 or less words, what would you say?

Finding Hope – A story where two couple both find what they are looking for.

I love reading the warnings on the blurbs for many books. If you could write a warning label for yourself as a person or an author, what would it say?

LOL! I love this question.

Warning: I love to laugh and I tend to have gutter-brain whenever possible. Be prepared to laugh and blush if you hang out with me.

>What does your protagonist think about you? Would he or she want to hang out with you, the author?

I think we would all get along great! I think they probably don’t like me much during the story, but by the end they see the reasoning. I always give them their happy ending.

Have you based any of your characters on someone you know, or real events in your own life?

I’m going to plead the fifth on that one….but, I do like to base some characters off of some of my favourite tv/movie characters.

Do you have a specific writing style?

ACTION PACKED!

How did you come up with the title?

This title actually changed a couple of times before I arrived at FINDING HOPE. Usually I know the title before I even start writing. Finding Hope is a play on words, which is my favourite thing to do if I can. Addison, Adrian, Aphrodite, and Ares all find hope in different ways in this story. You will have to read it to find out!

How did you come up with the cover design?

The covers were designed by EDHGraphics. The two models represent Ares and Aphrodite.

Where do you see yourself in five (5) years?

Writing as my full time career.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Greece.

Is there an Author that you would really like to meet?

I actually just got to meet one of my favourites – Kallypso Masters! But, I would love to meet Carrie Ann Ryan, Laura Kaye, Eden Bradley, and would definitely go all fan-girl on Gena Showalter!

Do you prefer ebooks, paperbacks or hardcover?

I like signed paperbacks to collect, but I actually prefer to read ebooks on my kindle.

What can we expect from you in the future?  ie More books of the same genre? Books of a different genre?

I seem to be leaning toward more paranormal, so that will be the mainstay of my books, but I have a few contemporary novellas planned and one contemporary BDSM series in the works for 2014. I’m one of those type of people who like to jump all over the place, so…you never know.

How do you market/promote your books?

Twitter, FB, printed media, blog hops, blog tours, and word of mouth.

What do you do to unwind and relax?

I LOVE to read, lol. But, my favourite veg on the couch with a coke and popcorn usually involves the tv shows Revenge, Vampire Diaries, and Lost Girl. A nap is always good too. I have a three year old, so I don’t get many of those anymore.

Have you ever read a book more than once?

Yes.

What is the best advice that you have ever been given when it comes to writing?

Keep going. Even when it’s hard and you just stare at the page, write something. It will come.

Cats or dogs?

Dogs.

White wine or red?

White

Coffee or tea?

Tea

Favourite food?

I love Italian.

Vanilla or chocolate ice cream?

Chocolate

What are 4 things you never leave home without?

Phone, wallet, writing journal, chapstick.

Laptop or desktop for writing?

Either, but usually laptop.

One of your favourite quotes –

“Love doesn’t make the world go round. Love is what makes the ride worthwhile.” Franklin P. Jones

List 3 of your all time favourite books?

It changes sometimes…. Acheron by Sherrilyn Kenyon, Masters of the Shadowlands by Cherise Sinclair, and Heart of the Dragon by Gena Showalter.

List 3 of your all time favourite movies?

The Underworld movies, The Jason Bourne movies, and the Iron Man movies.

An actor you have a crush on –

It’s a tie between Tom Welling and Ian Somerhalder

“Now you listen here, Adrian Colter.  I agreed to let you take Tom out hunting last weekend. If you can’t do this little favor for me… so help me…”

Adrian snorted a laugh.  He heard her hitting Tom and telling him to stop laughing.  There was a short period of golden silence, but Adrian knew better.  Missy’s brain was switching gears for another angle of attack.

“You won’t have to talk flowers and dresses with Addi.  Lord knows, I can’t even remember the last time she wore a dress.  She lives on a ranch in Montana.  Surely you can come up with something to say to a cattle rancher’s granddaughter.”

Adrian ran his hands through his hair.  He grabbed his brown leather coat from the edge of his bed.  “Fine.”  He took a few lumbering steps to the door, and then he opened it to Missy’s smiling face.  Tom was standing a few feet back – grinning. “If I didn’t know better, I might think you two planned this little scene.”

He caught a downward glance from Missy and another from Tom.  “You’ve got to be fucking kidding me. I have no desire to be set up with anyone, especially a wedding hookup.  How lame do you think I am?”  Adrian shook his head and stomped past Missy into the living room.  “This is really low, you guys.  I am not desperate.”

“Adrian,” Missy started, “we know you’re not desperate, but Addi…”

Realization struck.  The setup wasn’t for him; it was for her friend. Adrian whirled around to face Missy again.  “Dammit, Missy.  There’s a reason some women can’t get a man.  Usually it’s because something is wrong with them.”

He regretted the words as soon as they’d left his mouth.  Missy’s eyes watered, and even Tom’s gaze held utter loathing. His own self-disgust made him grimace.

“You are an asshole, Adrian Colter.”  Her voice was sharp, anger clipping every word. “Daddy will pick her up.  You can just sit here and drink your beer. Alone.”  She grabbed her yellow handbag from the couch and her coat from the hook at the front door.  “Tom?”

Adrian frowned as Tom hurried to her side and helped her into her long pink wool coat.

“You need to chill out, Adrian,” Tom shouted before slamming the door closed.

Damn it all to hell! Adrian kicked off his boots and sank into his huge recliner.  He’d made a mess of this one.
