When Rory Ó Cuinn, a Sidhe warrior, is sent by the Sidhe Queen’s Council to reestablish the magically enhanced vampire hunters known as Guardians, he doesn’t question his mission.

Lord Lorccán is a rare vampire noble, as he only kills humans who are far more monster than not. When he meets the enigmatic vampire Mistress Anya from the House Millar, he believes he’s found an ally in creating a warrior class to police the vampires and protect the innocent—human and vampire alike.

The two goals bring Rory and Lor together, in more ways than one. But Sidhe nobles aren’t meant to love the damned and Rory fights against a rising attraction for Lor, just as Lor pushes every one of Rory’s buttons—mostly on purpose.

When they team up, using both their magics and knowledge, to save those that matter most and find possible future Guardians, their predesigned realities and perceptions change and twist. As love, hate, passion, and betrayal collide, the only question left is which emotions the pair will grasp and hold.

I gently squeezed the hand that still held mine. “Lorccán, could we adjourn to the study? I want to spend more time getting to know my charge and hopefully I can then figure out the strange reaction you both have had to the vampire girl.”

“I already told you, Piscín, my home is yours. The study would be fine, as long as Dec doesn’t mind.”

“No, I’m game.”

We stood and headed to the study where I had spent most of the day before.

“Oh, hey. You do realise that there’s no one here to yell at us for acting up?” Declán suddenly chirped, grinning from ear to ear at Lorccán, as they proceeded me into the study.

The growl that suddenly burst from Lorccán was frightening. All at once he turned and pounced at Declán. Dec spun with amazing speed for a human and managed to use Lor’s strength and weight against him. When they landed, Declán was on top, attempting to pin Lor’s hands to the floor.

Before I thought about it, I had silver blades in hand and surged forward to protect Declán. Dec suddenly shifted from straddling Lorccán to crouching over him protectively, his own blades suddenly appearing in hand. “Stop! Put your blades down now, Rory! Don’t make me have to fight you, please. I will if you push.”

I stopped to process Declán’s words against what I’d just witnessed. “But, he attacked you!” I countered. “Why are you protecting him?”

“He was not attacking me. Rory, he was reacting to what I’d said. Now, put your blades away. I don’t wish to fight you, but I will not allow you to harm Lor.”

Lorccán had gone still as only a vampire could, eyes wide with disbelief. “I would not attack Declán. You misunderstand. We were playing. We found out the first time we met that he without his blades, and me without my fangs and power, are actually pretty closely matched. Anya found it amusing, but his husband always becomes upset; convinced I’m either incapable of control or trying to seduce the lad. Nicholas is far too possessive and jealous for us to play or practise if he’s nearby.”

Looking back and forth between the two, Declán had not moved from his defencive stance over Lorccán yet, I tried again, “But the growl. The surprise attack. But—”

“Why would I defend him if he was attacking me?” Declán interrupted.

“I don’t know, but as you serve vampires and a House, mate with vampires, even guard them at council meetings…how would I know why you would protect a creature that was attacking you?”

Lorccán’s face crumpled at my words. He went from a look of disbelief to one of hurt in an instant, then turned away from me. Reaching up to shift himself from under Declán, he murmured barely above a whisper, “Creature? You truly believe I would try to kill Dec? I know you’ve only known me a couple of days but—” Shaking his head he stood with such swift motion, I froze.

“Declán, you are more than capable of educating your trainer in how things are for you. You do not actually need me here for this. I will speak with you later.”

“Lor,” Declán said as he grabbed Lorccán’s arm. “He doesn’t understand yet. He’ll learn to see you like we do.”

Lorccán gave a tight nod, then was gone.

Romance Adventures #BlogHop & #Giveaway

Welcome to the Romance Adventures Blog Hop.
(a list of other authors to Hop to is at the bottom of this post)

This bloghop is a throwback to years ago when people didn’t come to a bloghop for $$$ but to discover great books to read. And we’ve plenty of those.

Don’t Worry, there’s a gift for you as well Winking smile

This spring, from Crushing Hearts & Black Butterfly Publishing, you will see the release of the next story in the House Millar series! It’s a little different, but hey, we like different, right? Right! So, what makes the next story, Glamour Blade (well besides the title NOT having the word ‘blood’ in it, lol)?

  1. It’s not from Anya’s POV;
  2. It’s not about the triad of Anya, Nicholas, and Declán;
  3. You’ll find out more about Lord Lorccán than you did in “Blood Marked”;
  4. Find out more about Mistress Anya, but from the perspective of a human, a sidhe, and a vampire;
  5. … and more, but for some of it, you’ll just have to read.

But what’s it about, you ask?

Rory Ó Cuinn is a sidhe warrior sent to reestablish the magically enhanced vampire hunters known as the Guardians. Lord Lorccán is a vampire noble, but he’s also a little unusual as he only kills humans that are barely more than monsters themselves.

When they team up to find possible future Guardians and to hunt other vampires—the ones that kill indiscriminately—reality and perceptions change for both men as love, hate, passion and betrayal collide.

It’s still paranormal romance but with a bit more kick and who is and who isn’t friend and foe becomes a bit more complicated. I’ll give you a little (unedited) tease and then tell you what your prize in and how to enter to get it, lol. Yeah, I know, tease you then give you gifts, hehe, but hey, ‘tis the season, right?

Entering the club was surreal in the extreme. The music thumped to the point I felt it more than heard it – which, with the hearing of a sidhe, was saying something indeed. The low lights combined with dark wood and too many bodies kept the place shifting and mysterious as I looked around. Low lights flashed over the dance floor and gave a strangeness to the dancers appearance – a sort of ethereal, shimmering draw.

Of course, that was deliberate on the part of the owners – easier to hide in plain sight. Vampires, with their slightly luminous skin, were something to behold under some lighting, unless precautions were taken.

I appreciated that the smoking ban was respected here, since I hated the smell almost as much as the taste of it on my tongue.

I had grown tired of club hopping, especially since I never seemed to be sent to the nicer places. Bars were fine, I just disliked the seedier ones, you know. . . where ‘no’ doesn’t mean no. I was thankful this wasn’t the usual. The two servants I’d chatted with, swore the aberration came to this club and would return tonight.

Now to hope I can find him and gain his attention.

Knowing my mark had a thing for leather, I’d dressed in the tightest leather pants I could obtain, and added a tight mesh top that showed off my smooth chest, tattoo, and pierced nipple. Add in the kohl around my eyes, the shimmering platinum ringlets my hair naturally fell into, and the glitter sheen on my cheeks, and I was guaranteed to turn heads. My doll-like appearance, for a warrior, was both a blessings and a curse.

I approached the bar in a slow saunter, took my time to observe the patrons as I passed. I hoped the information proved correct.

“Ale please,” I called to the bartender, the one person here I actually knew. He’d hit on me at one of the other clubs I’d checked out earlier in the week.

“Hey, cutie, you following me?” Chad teased, and winked. He knew he had no chance, but we were on good terms.

“Ever the hopeful,” I chided with a smile. “Actually, I’m looking for someone specific. Just hope I don’t end up leaving alone tonight.” I winked and kept my smile in place. Chad thought I sought a special trick for some play, an illusion I planned to keep in place.

“Well, when you find him, let me know. I want to see what kind of man has you so eager.”

Making the circuit a second time, I headed back to the bar. The hairs on my arms suddenly stood on end. I could feel eyes on me, and while that wasn’t unusual – especially in a club – this, I knew, was more than just some mortal ogling my backside.

Arriving back at the bar, I turned to face the crowd, and sought the one staring at me. After Chad poured me a fresh glass of ale, I turned to pick it up. That’s when things got interesting.

A warm shock surged through me as someone ran their hand up my arm. Even through the mesh I could feel the fingers, long and strong, but cool – strange in a place like this. I knew, no human’s touch, could cause such a shock.

I turned to find the owner of the roving fingers. The stranger trailed his agile digits up, over my shoulder to the back of my neck. I slowly raised my eyes to meet his, curious to see whose hand touched me in such a sensual yet possessive manner.

Wow! Definitely vampire, aberration thankfully. The strange
r stood next to me, body turned, so when I straightened, I was neatly tucked into his form.

The creature was tall – probably a good six-four – lean bodied with a nearly gaunt appearance to his face, which gave him an intense and captivating appearance.

The stranger’s hair was a vibrant red, pulled back into a tail at his neck, and his eyes a shocking teal. He wore an ankle-length, flared leather skirt and a lace-up, halter-style, tight leather top – obviously made for a male form. Somehow, it was exceedingly sexy and masculine.

“Mmm, who do we have here?” The aberration’s sensuous voice carried a subtle undercurrent of curiosity mixed in with desire.

“Rory, sir.” Looking up from under my lashes, I smiled and arched into the male’s touch as I asked, “And you are?”

With the quirk of a small smile, he leaned down to whisper in my ear, “I’m Lorccán, though I like the way sir sounds coming from your sweet lips.” Tracing the shell of my ear with a fingertip, he continued to purr, “Why don’t you accompany me outside, piscín.”

I hadn’t expected the vampire to have such an effect on me, not when I knew what he was, dammit. Not trusting my voice, I simply nodded my consent. Lorccán’s hand slid down to my waist and pulled me against his body, before he silently lead me outside. When we reached the club doors, Lorccán motioned to a young, human, woman who headed toward us.

“Andy, my sweet, we’re leaving. Please, get the car.”

“Already, sir? She looked me over and offered a smile. "Be right back.” She practically skipped back to the parking area. A few moments later a car pulled up and Lorccán escorted me into the back of a sleek, black Mercedes-Benz S-Class sedan. The entire time he continued to toy with the nape of my neck, as he kept me tucked into his side. His behaviour mystified me.

Long, powerful hands twisted my body. The vampire, Lorccán, gazed at my face as he stroked his long fingers across his cheek, and up into his hair. Even with the knowledge of what he was, the fact that I was prey to him, I wanted more than just the touches Lorccán gave me.

What is wrong with me? I’m here to recruit him – the outfit and club were a lure to find him and gain his attention, but not for this!

Leaning down, Lorccán lightly bussed his lips across my temple, feathering against both eyelids and finally pressed the softest of touches to my lips. I gasped at the sudden tingle that shot through me. When my lips parted, Lorccán took it as an invitation and used more force as his lips caressed mine.

Deepening the kiss, his hands began to explore more of my body, Lorccán’s tongue teased across my bottom lip, seeking entrance. I couldn’t hold back the moan, or the slight shiver as it raced throughout my body. Opening wider to allow him entrance, Lorccán plundered my willing mouth, tasting everything he could reach. Sucking on my tongue once he’d captured it, he moved to nibble on my lower lip. Lorccán maneuvered me with quick insistent hands so that I straddled his lap.

He released my mouth and trailed kisses and nips down my jaw. Tracing the pulse in my neck, he gently sucked the skin, scraping his teeth across my pulse, and applied firm but gentle pressure. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I managed to keep enough sense to note that while Lorccán, sucked and nibbled, his fangs did not join the party. Not able to help myself, I pushed into the ministrations with a low moan.

Lorccán’s fingers skimmed across my pierced nipple. I shivered and pushed into him, desperate for more. He managed one good pinch when a knock on the window interrupted us. Startled out of the sensual fog, I realized we had stopped and someone waited on the other side of the car door. Letting out a small growl, Lorccán slid me deftly off his lap just as the door opened. The loss of his lips and body was painful and confusing. I wanted to be back in his arms again!

Obviously, I’ve lost my bloody mind.

Excerpt

“I have a sinking suspicion that you have no idea what got them all riled. Do you?” he asked gently. Louie looked gorgeous, of course, but his perfect features were marred with worry. It was sometimes hard to look into those divine pale ice-blue eyes though; they reminded me so much of Braden’s.

“No, no one would answer my questions.”

“Now that I understand what they were actually asking – still can’t believe they managed to keep it hidden this long – I’m not sure my previous counsel would be the same. But, I also know you, once given, you never back out of a promise,” Louie continued unhappily.

“I thought you supported Nicholas. Why are you unhappy?” Could he please get to the point?

“It wasn’t Nicholas I supported the other night. I was supporting you and what I thought would make you happy. I told you that. However, what you said about not being able to undo it is more accurate than you thought. This ritual and charm actually link you on a more fundamental level. In Nic’s case I’m not that worried. But, he wants to link you both with Declán. That’s really the part concerning us.” Louie reached out, taking my hand between his. He kept his eyes focused on our hands as he played with my fingers for a minute.

“Why is your worry for Declán? I mean, is it dangerous to him or something?” He had me scared. I wouldn’t do anything that would endanger Declán . . . Nicholas should know that!

“No. It’s not him that I fear for,” he explained. “It’s you, your heart and mind that worry me. I know how hard it was for you to lose Braden. Twice. But when Declán passes, if you have done what they are asking, it might literally kill you.” The pain in his voice was terrifying.

My mind chose then to shut down. I knew Louie was still talking, but I had no idea what he said. I couldn’t handle discussions of Declán’s eventual death right then. My mind kept replaying the life fading from Braden, over and over. (I may be a vampire but I never willingly killed a human, those that served Marcus notwithstanding.) But watching my husband die nearly killed me before, mentally anyway. Now Louie was suggesting that this bonding would make it even worse when Declán died? I barely maintained my hold on sanity most days as it was . . .

“ . . . Anya,” Louie snapped. I had a feeling he had been calling me, especially since he had a hold of my arms and was shaking me. “Anya?”

A rún?” Blinking and looking around I realized Louie was on his knees in front of me, that same look of panic etched into his face that was becoming all too familiar lately. He stopped shaking me but didn’t let go. He was staring into my eyes with such force I wanted to retreat from the power of his gaze. “I-I’m sorry.”

“Anya? Are you back with me now?” His hands were gripping my arms so tightly his fingers bit into my flesh, painfully.

“Um, ow,” I complained, pulling my arms out of his grip. “It’s bad enough when I draw my own blood, but come on, no one else gets to do that!”

Louie broke his focus and looked down at where he’d held me. His pale ice-blue eyes went wide. “Oh, God! I’m sorry.” He moved back, looking horrified. His fingers had gouged in pretty good.

Sadly, even though it hurt, I, as usual, found it mildly interesting and amusing. “Huh, guess even healthy I can bleed. Weird,” I murmured as I twisted my arms a little to inspect the wounds. “Good thing I heal fast, huh?”

Poor Louie did not find it amusing. “I am so, so sorry. I just panicked . . . I’ve been saying your name for a while now,” he said reverting to French in his panic and unease. He looked down at his own hands, not meeting my eyes as he spoke. “I can’t believe I did that,” he choked.

Gently I put my fingers under his chin to raise his eyes back to mine. “You’re a vampire, blood shouldn’t bother you. . .”

“Again!” Geoff barked.

His voice dripped annoyance, as usual. He had me training like Declán, though I didn’t train with Declán. They – Geoff, Jonathan, Nicholas, and Louie – had all certified Declán ‘insane and ready’ to use his skills for something other than ‘playing’ with them. Okay, so he’s not technically insane, I just worry about my human love risking his life hunting our kind – well, the murderous vampires anyway. Annoyingly enough, I still wasn’t allowed to even watch him practice. “This time pretend you actually want to do damage.” Geoff sighed.

Scowling back at him, I retook my stance. I wasn’t allowed to speak. That was considered cheating. We were working on one-on-one combat today, though I still didn’t see why. If it wasn’t at least small groups, then why would I need to fight physically?

“The rules of engagement are simple, Anya – strike. No mercy – strike. Once the commitment is made – kill. Don’t let them touch you – destroy. You cannot appear weak – annihilate. There will be times you can’t rely on your voice as you saw already during your rescue of Nicholas. How would you have fared without being able to fight? Also, it might help you focus some of those cravings that have awakened within you.” Geoff continued with his lecture as he attacked again.

He claimed that I needed to learn not to hyper-focus on just the combat. That I must learn to hear and see all around me, never letting my focus settle for too long. While I understood the logic, and even agreed, I preferred to use my voice to solve issues rather than violence. Okay, so I’m a weird vampire . . . What else is new?

Running forward, I dropped down, catching him hard in the hip, spinning him up and back into a wall. Seemed he hadn’t expected that form of attack. Good. He rolled before I could get to him again, but was unable to make it back to his feet. With a growl, I landed atop him, slamming him to the ground, knees in his back with my nails into the back of his neck. I barely remembered not to  dig them in. From out of nowhere, strong arms pulled me back and slammed me to the floor. I didn’t even feel the hit. It didn’t register at first who held me, as I managed to evade the attempt to pin me.

The growling continued as I flipped around landing a solid kick to the ribs of my attacker while trying to keep up with where Geoff was. He again attempted to strike at me, catching my arm enough to cause mild pain but not clamping down, allowing me to spin out of his grasp and avoid the attempted blow to my back. Nicholas!

It didn’t matter that there were now two attackers coming from different directions. I leapt up to grab the beam above, and the two crashed into each other. Memories of trainings I’d had before may be lacking, but my instincts to survive worked just fine, much to everyone’s confusion and annoyance.

Dropping back down and into a low crouch, I moved forward as they untangled their legs. Springing on Nicholas, I slammed him down on top of Geoff and bent to nip the back of his neck before sliding away. “Stop,” I commanded.

Both Nicholas and Geoff stopped moving. They didn’t even breathe Hmm, Nicholas is bleeding, guess I should do something to fix that. “You both can talk. Just no attacking right now, please.

“Now, Nicholas, a mhuirnín, you’re bleeding. Geoff, are you hurt any?” Were they mad?

The guys separated, moving to either side of me. Geoff appeared  hurt.

“Um, ow! What was that?” Nicholas asked looking a little wild as he reached up to touch his neck. “You actually bit me!” He looked angry. Oops.

“Sorry, but you attacked me. It was only a nip,” I said defensively. They both should’ve been glad I restrained myself, pulling such stunts! “Stop messing with it, so I can heal you.”

Moving behind Nicholas to heal the small gash in his neck, I spoke to Geoff. “Are you hurt? You’re not standing quite right. And just what was all that about? I nearly took both your heads off.”

“Bloody hell, Anya. This was supposed to be sparing practice.  Spar-ring. You weren’t supposed to actually kill us. I think you broke something; luckily I heal fast.” Geoffrey tenderly touched his side while making a sour face in my direction. “Were you planning to kill us or did restraint come to mind at some point?” he snapped.

“I was restrained, thank you very much. I made sure not to drive my fingers into your neck, leaving your head neatly attached and unharmed. I only nipped Nicholas as opposed to what could have happened. And, if I recall your initial instructions, I was supposed to strike without weakness or mercy. Now will you believe that this is too dangerous? I have no desire to harm either of you, especially not considering you got Nicholas in on this. It’s so hard not to let myself get caught up in the power and pleasure of using my strength.

“I’ve tried to make you all understand that this is not a game for me. I know what I am capable of and you, Nicholas,” I grumbled, folding my arms across my chest. “You, of all people, should know better. What if I’d lost control and really hurt you? I couldn’t bear that. Please,” I begged. I understood they wanted to make me powerful and protected, but this was not safe for them.

“Maybe she’s right, Geoff. I know she could have done much worse with only a little more effort. I’d hate to be the one she actually wanted to hurt.” Nicholas rubbed absently at the now healed spot on his neck.

“Um, I suppose,” Geoff sulked. “I just worry about her getting taken or destroyed while she’s out running around. She so rarely thinks of her own protection.

“I would imagine you’re exquisite to watch in true combat sis, but I think I’d like that to not be with me again. At least not for a while. I’m going up and see if Peony would like to play nurse.”

As he shuffled towards the stairs, I noticed his right hip was also not moving correctly. He’d be fine shortly, healing being easy for us, but it bothered me that I managed to hurt them both while restrained. This was the precise issue that made me so afraid, again, of my relationship with Declán. I hated what Marcus and his House., had turned me into – like being a vampire wasn’t deadly enough . . . no, they had to torture me until I cracked. Yet without what I was now . . . how would I protect my family?

Cover for Glamour Blade

Glamour Blade is an excerpt book of sorts.  This story is from the perspective of Sir Rory of the house, o Cuinn. Master diviner and Guardian trainer; but, has he says, “I go by Rory Quinn locally.”

You will gain a more in depth view of Lord Lorccán and Sir Rory, the Guardian trainer as well as some of the seedier side of vampirism.
