Dirk Krause is an asshole of the first degree. His life is a hell of his own making, and he makes everyone around him just as miserable. When he’s injured on the job while fighting a fire, he’s nearly unbearable to the hospital staff, and of course no one from his unit cares enough to visit.

Lee Stockton is the new guy at the station, so he gets saddled with the job of bringing Dirk a sympathy bouquet from the guys at the firehouse. To Dirk’s surprise, Lee sees through him like a pane of glass and doesn’t take any of his crap. Lee’s determined to get Dirk to stop being a dick just to push everyone away. When their fighting turns to fucking, will the fireworks shine brightly on a possible relationship or leave them with nothing but ashes?

For any that know me, they would tell you that I don’t usually care for novella and short stories BUT I love Andrew Grey’s stories and characters so much that I decided to give Redemption by Fire a try, a fact I am very pleased about. It is one of the best stories I’ve read in a while!

Dirk is a major asshat, so much that his own FF company don’t even bother to visit him in the hospital. For them to do that he must be beyond horrible to deal with as that is not normal behaviour for a FF.

The romance builds in fits and starts but it makes sense in context and makes it much more believable considering Dirk is a hostile closeted jerk and Lee is an out and proud gay man. Lee is the exact opposite of Dirk in many ways and is not willing to compromise for others.

I’m not sure if Redemption by Fire is a HFN or a HEA story as there is more to come in the series – see note below – but I was pleased by the way the novella ended. I can’t wait for the next instalment to come out! The sex was hot, the chemistry believable, and the problems all to common in reality. (Wait till you meet Dirk’s father, UGH.) A wonderful, quick read!

** Note: Redemption by Fire is part of a Novella set – Strengthened by Fire and Burnished by Fire are to be released later this year.

Andrew grew up in western Michigan with a father who loved to tell stories and a mother who loved to read them. Since then he has lived throughout the country and traveled throughout the world. He has a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and works in information systems for a large corporation.

Andrew’s hobbies include collecting antiques, gardening, and leaving his dirty dishes anywhere but in the sink (particularly when writing) He considers himself blessed with an accepting family, fantastic friends, and the world’s most supportive and loving partner. Andrew currently lives in beautiful, historic Carlisle, Pennsylvania.

I love to hear from readers. Comments, thoughts, and questions are always encouraged and appreciated.

For someone who doesn’t like shorter fiction, you seem to be reading a lot of it recently! 🙂 But your review does make this sound like a great, short read. Thanks for the recommendation!

Are you pickin’ on me, lol 😉
It is weird that I’ve had requests for short stories / novellas lately but honestly, I don’t usually like them. I prefer 60k + usually to tell a story but there are a few I’ve found to love and this is one.
Glad you stopped by 😀 TY

Thank you so very much. I can’t tell you how happy I am that you liked this story. I think you’re going to like the next one as well. One hint it has a chicken and beefcake dinner.

    Thanks again.

Well now I will just have to buy this. I am a massive Andrew Grey fan and I do prefer his longer reads but hey I will give anything of his a go 🙂

Don’t you just love it when a short story takes you by surprise? I love when that happens and it doesn’t happen often. 🙂 Sounds like a great novella!
