Jin Rayne is still growing into his frightening new powers as a nekhene cat and his place as reah of Logan Church’s tribe when he learns that a sepat, an honor challenge, has been called. Logan, who has never wanted to do anything but lead his small-town tribe, must travel around the world to Mongolia and fight to become the most powerful leader in the werepanther world.

Logan won’t be the only one making the journey. As his mate, Jin must fight with him to honor his commitment to Logan, his culture, and his tribe. But the trial is long, involving a prolonged separation between the two men, and Logan’s humanity is at stake. In order to make it through the nightmarish sepat, Jin and Logan must accept their fates, trust each other, and honor the vows between them no matter the cost.

My Thoughts

Honored Vow has to be my favourite of the Change of Heart series books by Mary Calmes. I loved Change of Heart and thought Trusted Bond was even better but she has truly outdone herself with the latest in the Jin and Logan saga!

I do feel a need to post a warning though, this book has some very brutal scenes. Mary’s books often have some mix of violence but this one includes skinning, beatings, dismemberment, and near rape. That having been said, the story is so much more than the warning. This book picks up where Trusted Bond ended except in this case Logan is being forced to honour a barbaric tradition where Samels all over the world are hand chosen to fight, destroying the other samels and their yarehas, to take the place of the current (and disgustingly corrupt) Samel-atan. Honored Vow is centered completely around the trials and combat of the tradition, as well as the corruption of the Samel-atan.

Crane’s castration at his own fathers hand was devastating! Yuri finally finds love and does ‘some one else’ (nope, not telling who). Oh, and we find out that there is one other Reah alive, though she is NOTHING like Jin –sadly. The bittersweet ending though left me torn between crying with joy and crying with devastation. Let’s just say the family is restructured greatly, though it leaves things open for a whole new set of stories that are intertwined yet self-sufficient.

Honored Vow is engaging, fast paced, hot yet sad and terrifying all at the same time. Few authors can pull so many emotions at ones and make it something that you devour in one sitting yet Mary Calmes manages it, again. I truly hope that there will be more books in this series (pleasepleaseplease . . .)

If you love shifter/were stories, especially M/M ones, you can do no better than to read the entire Change of Heart series, especially Honored Vow (must read in order).

My Rating

About the Author

Mary Calmes currently lives in Honolulu, Hawaii, with her husband and two children and hopes to eventually move off the rock to a place where her children can experience fall and even winter. She graduated from the University of the Pacific (ironic) in Stockton, California, with a bachelor’s degree in English literature. Due to the fact that it is English lit and not English grammar, do not ask her to point out a clause for you, as it will so not happen. She loves writing, becoming immersed in the process, and falling into the work. She can even tell you what her characters smell like. She works at a copy store but has been unable to incorporate that into a book… yet. She also buys way too many books on Amazon.
