After an asteroid strikes Earth, a series of violent earthquakes destroy secluded Phoenix and leave survivor Elliot struggling to stay focused in the bleak aftermath. And then he meets fellow survivor Adam. Together, the two search for reliable shelter and other survivors while distant murky clouds fast approach. Their hunt for shelter leads them down an alternate path when they find spray painted symbols directing them to a mysterious place: Refuge Inc.

As ominous clouds slowly shut off all light to their devastated world, they are forced to come to terms with their pasts and their growing attraction for each other. Neither thought their pasts and personal crises would affect their ability to endure the horrors they’re forced to live through.

Neither thought they would be drawn so close to one another in the aftermath of an unimaginable catastrophe. By working together, can they continue to survive? Or will the mystery of Refuge Inc. cause diverse expectations and lead them to decisions that further threaten their lives?

Please Note: This book has been given a "Sizzling (highly explicit sex scenes/language)" heat rating by the author.

What is the name of your most recent book and if you had to sum it up in 30 or less words, what would you say?

Before the Darkness (Refuge Inc. Book #1). An MM post-apocalyptic erotic romance that takes place the days after an asteroid impact, following Elliot and Adam and focuses on their growing attraction as they hunt for Refuge Inc.

I love reading the warnings on the blurbs for many books. If you could write a warning label for yourself as a person or an author, what would it say?

Warning: Prepare for an intense ride into this author’s vivid, tantalizing and sometimes raunchy imagination.

Do you have a specific writing style?

In Before the Darkness I changed my style a bit to make it more dark and serious. You won’t get the lighthearted, fun-loving, easy-going feel in this story. But it fits. It’s about the end of the world, lots of emotion and tension.

Do you have plans for a new book? Is this book part of a series?

Before the Darkness is the first book in the Refuge Inc. series. Book one focuses more on the developing relationship between the main characters. While book two’s focus is more on uncovering the mysteries of Refuge Inc., and furthering the relationship between characters.

Who designed the cover of your book?

Most of my indie book covers were designed by fellow author Mina Carter. She does an amazing job with bringing your vision to life. I find that I tell her what I want and she delivers nearly perfect covers the first time every time. Absolutely great cover artist!

Do you prefer ebooks, paperbacks or hardcover?

I prefer reading fiction from my Kindle Fire but enjoy collecting nonfiction paperbacks mostly in the writing resource category. I like thumbing through the books and leaving physical notes and markers. It’s quicker and easier for me, and I never have to charge a battery when looking up info.

Have you ever read a book more than once?

Besides my own when polishing the manuscript? Yes, most of V.C. Andrews earlier novels I just can’t get enough of. I love the intrigue and family secrets. The characters are just as captivating.

What book are you currently reading and in what format (ebook/ paperback/ hardcover)?

I’m trying to get through the fifth installment of Hugh Howey’s post-apocalyptic/dystopian Wool Series. For some reason I keep getting distracted and can’t finish reading as fast as I did the others. Possibly because it has the largest word count out of all the books in the series.

Are there any new Authors that have seized your interest and why?

A new author to me who I’m interested in seeing more from is Kelley York especially after reading her book Hushed. About a young murderer you can’t help but feel for.

Do you write under a pen name?

Actually I do not. Leslie Lee Sanders is my real name. Since I was a kid I dreamed of seeing my name on the cover of a book. I guess now that I’m living that dream it’s difficult to part with my name. And also because of that stubborn hope that maybe my name will one day be a household one. 😉

"See that dark color on the horizon?" Adam pointed to the east, suddenly looking somber. "That’s a wall of smoke, ash, dust and who knows what else, and it’s coming our way."

"What? What do you mean?" A bit of panic began to stir in Elliot’s stomach like a bowl of his mother’s spicy and overly greasy chili. He’d thought the worst was over.

"Ever heard of impact winter?" Adam’s green eyes pierced his and neither moved. "What’s headed for us isn’t good. We’re gonna have to take shelter somewhere and fast before it blocks out all light and it gets so dark we won’t be able to tell which way is up. Can’t run from it either," he added, as if predicting Elliot’s next question. "Been watching it for a couple hours now and it’s moving pretty fast."

"What do you mean it’s going to get dark?" He knew he looked like a wide-eyed idiot, but he didn’t care much about his appearance at the moment.

"Let me put it this way. Once the sun sets we’re not gonna see it rise for quite some time. That wall of soot headed our way is so thick it will block out the sun. It will take months, maybe years, for all the crap to fall down."

"Are you sure?" He dipped his eyebrows suspiciously. "How do you know all this?"

"When those assholes finally told us that an asteroid might hit, I went looking for info about anything to do with asteroids hitting Earth and that’s what I found out. We need to find some shelter."

Elliot looked at the dark grey horizon. Indeed, the cloud of unnerving darkness grew bigger, wider, closer. His heart dropped, it sank in the pit of his stomach like a ton of concrete rubble. "We’re not going to make it, huh?" He gulped, suddenly feeling defeated. Panic. "What’s the point in finding shelter when we’re not gonna live to see the sun again?"

Adam grabbed his hand, gave it a gentle squeeze and let it loose before Elliot realized it had happened. The friendly squeeze hadn’t been part of his imagination. A look of sincerity and concern painted Adam’s handsome face. "I was beginning to think the same thing and then I saw you. Like I said, two heads are better than one."

Good interview! Congratulations on the release of Before the Darkness. It sounds like an interesting book and is definitely a good premise (especially with the strange weather we’ve been having this year).

  1. Great interview! Loved the excerpt and the voice. Good luck with this release.
