As a pale revenant—the vampire faction believing all life is sacred—sixteen-year-old Scarlett Ellis has learned to hide in the human world. She goes to night-school, works at a coffee shop, and her uncle Chasem trains her in martial arts. No matter what, she has to be prepared, because when she turns seventeen, she’ll be of Dawning age—and her biological father Apollo vows to see her dead first.

Expecting her Dawning to be impossible, she accepts the fact that she will become a rogue, forever hunted by revenant renegades and outcast by her own people. Scarlett thinks she’s prepared for this—until the curly-haired Nicholas Lightener walks into her life and asks her out on a date.

Torn between her feelings for Nick and the danger of the revenant world, Scarlett’s strange life is turned inside-out when she’s kidnapped and forced to do the one thing she swore she’d never do. Plus, she has no idea whose memories keep appearing in her dreams, or if they can even help her. Determined to free herself from a death sentence, Scarlett must fight to become who she was born to be.

He moves so fast it’s almost a blur. I force myself to quit thinking, quit reacting to every action and strike, but I do succeed in keeping him from hitting my body. After a few minutes of the blistering attack, I find my strength flagging. I become slower, and Chasem takes advantage of it, hitting me hard on the shoulder, and I drop one of my Kali sticks. Chasem drops both of his and reaches out, lifting me by the neck toward the wall, pinning me hard against it.

"Never, ever give up! Do you hear me? Never!" he screams, his hot breath on my face. I squirm and struggle to get free of his grip but find I’m stuck.

His gaze is fierce, his lip curled up in a snarl. "Fight!" he screams again, but it’s as if I can’t convince myself that I can get free. My visions starts to darken from the lack of oxygen, and Chasem releases me. I collapse in a puddle, heaving hard and coughing, trying to suck air into my lungs though my burning throat.

I see Chasem pace for a few moments with his hands on his hips, like he doesn’t know what to do. All around him, the mirrors tremble slightly, as if they’ll shatter at any moment. Chasem reaches for his water, takes a quick drink, then hurls the bottle toward the wall. I’ve never seen him like this. He’s usually so contained—tough, but contained. Now, he seems like a caged lion.

He turns towards me and leans down. "You can’t be like this, Scar. You can’t. You have to keep fighting, no matter what. Do you understand? It will be a matter of life or death. Never surrender, do you understand?"

Jennifer will be awarding a digital copy of The Dawning of Scarlett via iBooks to 3 randomly drawn winners via rafflecopter during the tour.

When Rory Ó Cuinn, a Sidhe warrior, is sent by the Sidhe Queen’s Council to reestablish the magically enhanced vampire hunters known as Guardians, he doesn’t question his mission.

Lord Lorccán is a rare vampire noble, as he only kills humans who are far more monster than not. When he meets the enigmatic vampire Mistress Anya from the House Millar, he believes he’s found an ally in creating a warrior class to police the vampires and protect the innocent—human and vampire alike.

The two goals bring Rory and Lor together, in more ways than one. But Sidhe nobles aren’t meant to love the damned and Rory fights against a rising attraction for Lor, just as Lor pushes every one of Rory’s buttons—mostly on purpose.

When they team up, using both their magics and knowledge, to save those that matter most and find possible future Guardians, their predesigned realities and perceptions change and twist. As love, hate, passion, and betrayal collide, the only question left is which emotions the pair will grasp and hold.

Excerpt

I gently squeezed the hand that still held mine. “Lorccán, could we adjourn to the study? I want to spend more time getting to know my charge and hopefully I can then figure out the strange reaction you both have had to the vampire girl.”

“I already told you, Piscín, my home is yours. The study would be fine, as long as Dec doesn’t mind.”

“No, I’m game.”

We stood and headed to the study where I had spent most of the day before.

“Oh, hey. You do realise that there’s no one here to yell at us for acting up?” Declán suddenly chirped, grinning from ear to ear at Lorccán, as they proceeded me into the study.

The growl that suddenly burst from Lorccán was frightening. All at once he turned and pounced at Declán. Dec spun with amazing speed for a human and managed to use Lor’s strength and weight against him. When they landed, Declán was on top, attempting to pin Lor’s hands to the floor.

Before I thought about it, I had silver blades in hand and surged forward to protect Declán. Dec suddenly shifted from straddling Lorccán to crouching over him protectively, his own blades suddenly appearing in hand. “Stop! Put your blades down now, Rory! Don’t make me have to fight you, please. I will if you push.”

I stopped to process Declán’s words against what I’d just witnessed. “But, he attacked you!” I countered. “Why are you protecting him?”

“He was not attacking me. Rory, he was reacting to what I’d said. Now, put your blades away. I don’t wish to fight you, but I will not allow you to harm Lor.”

Lorccán had gone still as only a vampire could, eyes wide with disbelief. “I would not attack Declán. You misunderstand. We were playing. We found out the first time we met that he without his blades, and me without my fangs and power, are actually pretty closely matched. Anya found it amusing, but his husband always becomes upset; convinced I’m either incapable of control or trying to seduce the lad. Nicholas is far too possessive and jealous for us to play or practise if he’s nearby.”

Looking back and forth between the two, Declán had not moved from his defencive stance over Lorccán yet, I tried again, “But the growl. The surprise attack. But—”

“Why would I defend him if he was attacking me?” Declán interrupted.

“I don’t know, but as you serve vampires and a House, mate with vampires, even guard them at council meetings…how would I know why you would protect a creature that was attacking you?”

Lorccán’s face crumpled at my words. He went from a look of disbelief to one of hurt in an instant, then turned away from me. Reaching up to shift himself from under Declán, he murmured barely above a whisper, “Creature? You truly believe I would try to kill Dec? I know you’ve only known me a couple of days but—” Shaking his head he stood with such swift motion, I froze.

“Declán, you are more than capable of educating your trainer in how things are for you. You do not actually need me here for this. I will speak with you later.”

“Lor,” Declán said as he grabbed Lorccán’s arm. “He doesn’t understand yet. He’ll learn to see you like we do.”

Lorccán gave a tight nod, then was gone.

#Interview w/ Hope Ryan, Author of THE GEEK AND HIS ARTIST

Where were you born and where do you call home?

I was actually born in Nashville, Tennessee. I spent a good deal of time there as a teenager, as well. Home? Well, that’s a different story. I’m a bit of a wanderer. Right now, I’m hanging out in East Texas, but I hope someday to call the Pacific Northwest or Pittsburgh home again.

What is the name of your most recent book and if you had to sum it up in 30 or less words, what would you say?

My latest title is The Geek and His Artist and summed up in 30 words or less is: Brevity is not my strong suit. Seriously, this story started out as a short story, aimed at under 10k. As I was writing it, I got nervous as I approached 8, bit my nails at 10k and saw 12k sail by with no end in sight. I gave up and set it aside. That’s when Blue Eyes was written. And Geek got the full page time it needed.

What does your protagonist think about you? Would he or she want to hang out with you, the author?

I think Simon and Jimmy would both like me. Jimmy would be a lot more comfortable than Simon would, only because I’m very outwardly affectionate and welcoming. I’m a lot like Jimmy’s mom, in fact. So, Simon would probably like me but I’d take some getting used to, for him.

Which character speaks the loudest, to you? Do any of them clamor to be heard over the others?

Geek was originally supposed to be Jimmy’s story. While it still certainly tells Jimmy’s side of things, it didn’t take long for me to see Simon had the bigger struggle. He definitely needed to be heard more than Jimmy did.

How did you come up with the title?

Titling is the bane of my existence. I struggle every time with it. The Geek and His Artist started out as just a placeholder title, but the further I got, the more it fit.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

Fear is such a big part of the lives of so many young people. It’s a sad thing to consider, and for LGBTQ youth, it’s even more prevalent, not just from bullies, but from their own parents. What I’d love a reader to see is that fear is valid—it’s all right to be afraid—but it’s something that you can get past and there’s so much out there beyond the fear.

Do you have plans for a new book?   Is this book part of a series?

Well, I have series-itis. I’m terrible for this, but Sean and Kip have poked me quite a bit and I think I might end up writing their story yet, too.

What can we expect from you in the future?  i.e. More books of the same genre? Books of a different genre?

I love to explore different genres. I have a particular fondness for dystopian and hope to write something there, as well.

Coffee or tea?

Coffee, all the way. I don’t think I’d still be even remotely human without my cup (or three) each day!

Laptop or desktop for writing?

I have a desktop I use most often. I’m a gamer, so it’s also built for gaming. I have a laptop, as well, for when I need a change of scenery while I’m writing.

Thanks for stopping by! Be sure to follow the rest of the tour for chances to win a paperback copy of Geek and $25 to spend at Harmony Ink! Each comment below also qualifies you for an entry to the giveaway. One reader today will win a Geek character trading card of your choice!

Simon Williams spends his lunch periods drawing his geek and trying not to think about the terrors waiting for him at home. He needs to get away from his abusive father before he suffers the same grisly fate as his mother. Jimmy Bennet should be spending his lunch studying so his senior GPA is good enough to get him into college, but he can’t seem to focus thanks to his distracting artist. When he’s given the opportunity to tutor Simon in Trig and discovers Simon’s home-life nightmare, he wants nothing more than to get Simon out of danger. This need becomes more urgent when Simon comes to school the Monday after their first date with bruises, but it takes a broken leg before Jimmy can convince his boyfriend the Bennets really want him.

Life is unstable…

…What will be the trigger to dismantle it?

When high school senior Evangeline "Evan" Phillips moves half way across the country with her parents to a quaint town in Texas, it should be a chance to start over.

It should be.

Typical of Evan, she doesn’t share her parents’ optimism. Always the loner, she is prepared to hide behind work at the school newspaper until graduation. That is the seemingly bulletproof plan until she meets her new neighbors, Gavin and Brody Ferguson. The more Evan gets to know her neighbors, their band of friends, and frenemies, the more unsettling her new high school and community gets in Braxton Springs, Texas.

As Evan unwittingly digs deeper into the lives of those around her, her own skeletons begin to surface leaving her vulnerable and scrambling to keep her own sanity and reputation. Will Evan be able to get control over her spiraling secrets while discovering friendship and love for the first time?

Or will the issues and pressures of life as a band of not-so-average teens in a very typical high school become too much, resulting in the tragic dismantlement of an entire community and Evan herself?

Dismantling Evan is a fresh and edgy work of literary fiction that snapshots how life as a teen in modern society can be unstable and the social issues and pressures revolving around them can tip the fleeting stability of society over the edge.

Cover Reveal: Dismantling Evan by Venessa Kimball

Happy Cover Reveal Day!!!!!

I have been eagerly waiting to share Dismantling Evan’s cover and blurb with you for weeks now! Today is the day and I have a few giveaways to celebrate with you!

In this post, I am sharing not only the cover and blurb for Dismantling Evan, but the musical playlist I have spend the last five months building, listening to, being inspired by while I have written a story that has taken me through so many emotions, so much research, and so much heartache, anger,  and joy  (sometimes simultaneously).

The thing about Dismantling Evan is that it is not a typical teen contemporary novel. This is not a genre driven piece of fiction.  It is most definitely a literary driven piece of fiction because of the social issues addressed in the novel and how they reflect on our society, which is far from what I have written in the past. (For those of you who have read my paranormal sci-fi series will agree when you read D.E.)

Okay, okay! I have made you wait long enough….here is Dismantling Evan’s breath-taking cover (SK Whiteside- you are amazing!) and the much awaited back cover blurb.

Are you intrigued?
Anyone that is a teenager, has a teenager, or was a teenager long ago will find themselves in the the pages of D.E. at some point and that is why I fell in love with Evan’s snapshot of a not-so-average teen living with baggage in a very typical and sometimes intolerant society.
January 13th can’t come fast enough for me! squeeeeee!
For those of you that LOVE book trailers for novels, I have one for Dismantling Evan to share.
