YA Paranormal Romance

When a photo shoot ends in tragedy, Kira discovers her best friend, Lydia, has been keeping a secret. Knowing the truth, and accepting it, will change Kira’s life forever and thrust her into a world of ancient curses, magical objects, and savage enemies. What happens next will challenge everything Kira knows about her world, herself and the shape-shifting warrior she’s falling in love with. No longer the timid mouse her mother accused her of being, but a woman who finds the mental and physical strength to endure and survive.

BOUND is a heroic tale of true friendship, infinite sacrifice and untamed love.

My Thoughts

Bound is the fist book in the Crystor series. Kira is a teenage girl with normal problems and issues to her age, well, that’s how it seems at first anyways. Things quickly turn out to be very different for her and her BFF Lydia.

The story, characters and creatures of Bound are so richly written that you almost believe that these girls might just live down the street from you. It is not just another YA book guys! It is much richer and more enduring than many out there. And Kira? She is sooo not your typical ditzy/weak girl who needs to be rescued, yet she is. But even when she needs help or rescue she is no simpering little waif. I just love her.

Octavion, Lydia’s big brother, is strong, gorgeous, mysterious, oh, and stubborn beyond reason at times yet he has the biggest heart and will so what ever needs done. I’m sure many out there don’t like Octavion much as he does grate a bit but if you look at the why and how of it you see a proud, loving, dedicated and true brother, son, and friend (maybe more) emerge from the attitude he throws out.

Lydia and her alter Altaira are wonderful. Sweet and loving yet powerful and snarky. Just loved her/them.

I can’t wait for book 2, Broken to come out! If you haven’t read Bound you are missing a great read, a wonderful first of the series, and a great adventure / romance. You won’t regret this YA read! It’s definitely and un-put-downable and re-readable book!

My Thoughts

Emma Holly’s Hidden Talents contains a wonderful mix of reality and fantasy/paranormal creatures and events.  Ari and Adam are your key characters and WOW, are they hot together.

When telekinetic and healer, Ari, tracks the vile Eunuch to the pocket-reality / town Resurrection, NY, she meets Adam, the Alpha Were and lead detective for the RPD.  The intro scene with the Were’s is too funny (who knew were’s could be so amusing and petty at the same time – oh and do NOT pig out on the donuts, lol)

In Hidden Talents you have vampires, elves, fae, were’s, gargoyles (gotta love Garth!) among many others.  The struggle for Ari isn’t just the tracking and destruction of the Eunuch but also learning to trust and love.  One note: so few authors give magic personal drawbacks, Emma has a unique take on what it costs to have talents and magic . . . fantastic!

This is one sexy yet deep story about love, friendship, and doing the right thing, no matter the cost.  The world creation was amazing, characters very real even with their ‘unique’ natures, and how often do you find an Alpha that blushes?  I recommend this to any that love m/f paranormal romance!  The sex is hotter than HOT!

If he fails, Sabrina will never know peace, Ross will be kicked out of heaven, and the love of his life will die from a broken heart. Will that be enough time to heal the wounds a lifetime in the wrong body has caused?

My Thoughts

Let me start by saying that I love Marc. AJ Jarrett created characters that are believable and fun with just the right amount of sass and fire. I don’t want to give too much of Fate’s Second Chance away so this will be a short review but don’t let that fool you into thinking the story is not rich and passionate.

Spending a life in the wrong body would be hard on anyone, but what if you got a second chance not only for the right body but to have the one person you have always loved but that had always been out of reach (thanks to said wrong body)? This is just that story. Marc is the quintessential twink (IMHO), Shawn is a slightly reserved and paranoid top . . . add in a loyal and loving sister and a Guardian Angel that seriously needs to man up and you have a wonderful story.

Love, hot man sex, and the power of friendship and love combine to entertain your heart and your ‘loins’. I recommend Fate’s Second Chance to any that love fun-lovin’ M/M romance.

EXCERPT:

I always assumed when I died my life would flash before my eyes, but that was so not the case. Sitting on an airplane with complete strangers as the massive piece of machinery plummeted to the ground, all I could think was why the fuck did I take the earlier flight.

I was being a little dramatic I know, but I was about to die and leave my sister and my best friend. The only people I loved in the world, plus the only family I had. I was more than likely leaving them due to faulty equipment or engine malfunction. What a lousy way to go.

My poor sister Serena, what would she do? Our parents died when I was fifteen and she twenty-two. We were all we had in the world, and now I would be bailing on her too. Of course, this entire situation wasn’t my fault but it didn’t make it any easier. She’d been my friend and parent for the past ten years. I loved Serena, she was truly the best sister slash parent a girl could ever have.

Then there was Shawn, my best friend since kindergarten. The only man I ever truly loved. He was there when my parents died, there when Serena caught me having my first beer, and there when my first boyfriend broke my heart. Whenever I needed someone, he was there to pick up the pieces no matter how big or how small. I couldn’t have picked a better friend.
The only thing bad about being in love with Shawn was that he’s gay. I’m a girl so a romantic relationship would never happen. Now I wouldn’t even get the chance to say I love you in more than a friend kind of way. Maybe going down was for the best. Telling Shawn my true feelings would ruin our friendship.

These were the things going through my mind minutes before the plane crashed and I’d die. To have just one more chance to tell Shawn and Serena I loved them, I would have given anything.

The swift drop in altitude told me the engines had stalled. I heard other passengers screaming, crying, and praying, but I sat there with my eyes clenched tight. Behind my eyelids, all I saw were Shawn and Serena. Then nothing.

* * * *

Sometime later I woke up. I took in my surroundings–white walls, white bed linens, and I was wearing a white gown. My nose twitched at the sterile clean smell of the room. I had to be in a hospital.

How could I have survived a plane crash? Maybe I had dreamed the whole thing. I sat up and looked around me. I took notice of the large white room with fluffy white fog floating around the floor.

Okay, that was weird. I had to be dreaming.

“You’re not dreaming, sweetheart. You’re dead as a doornail.”

What the fuck? I spun around and clutched my blanket to my chest. There was a man leaning against the wall. I could tell even in a relaxed state he would tower over my short stature. He had a golden complexion, platinum blond hair that came to his shoulders, and a smile on his face that lit up the room. Definitely gorgeous in a preppy guy way, as if he just stepped out of a J Crew ad. He wore all white as well.

What was up with all the white? Okay, this wasn’t the time for stupid questions. I needed to focus.

“Yes, please focus since we don’t have a lot of time here, sweetheart, but thanks for the compliment.”

Okay, is he reading my freaking mind? I tilted my head to the side to study this apparent psychic medium.

“Yes, I can read your thoughts, but can you start using your mouth? It would make this less awkward,” the man said as he pushed away from the wall.

I tried to swallow but my mouth was too dry. I wasn’t sure if it was the rising fear or shock that had me unable to move or react. “Where am I?” Start slow, Marie, you can do this.

“Okay, once again, speak words to me. Reading your mind is giving me a headache and that’s just poor manners.” The man came and sat down at the end of the bed I was lying on. “To answer your question, you’re in what we like to call limbo. There has been a mistake, or actually,” the man let out a small chuckle, “a few mistakes but who’s counting. My name is Ross and I’m your guardian angel.”

The angel named Ross held out his hand for me to shake. So I did. After all, I was completely crazy. The dude just said I was in limbo. Crazy Town, population me.

“Girl, seriously, snap out of it. My name is Ross, your guardian angel. Let us speed this up, shall we? You remember the plane crash?”

Plane crash, plane crash, plane crash. Fuck! Ross nodded up and down. “I’m really dead. My whole life seems like a dream and I’m just now waking up.” I looked around me to get a better look. “Is this the waiting room for Heaven?” I whispered as I leaned toward him.

Ross shook his head at me. Sue me; I was new to all this dying business.

“L-I-M-B-O. Did you get that? Jeez, you’re slow,” Ross said as he relaxed back on his elbows.

“Dude, you don’t need to shout at me or spell shit. I hear perfectly fine and speak English. You’re just a lousy explainer,” I said as I pointed my finger at him. Okay, maybe yelling at the crazy man claiming to be my guardian angel wasn’t the smartest thing for me to do.

“I’m trying to explain but you’re not listening.” I watched as Ross ran his hands through his white blond hair as he mumbled something I couldn’t make out. “Okay, let’s try this again. My name is Ross, you died in the plane crash, and you’re sitting in limbo. Long story short, there’s been a mistake and like I said this dying business isn’t the first mistake to happen to you.”

I chewed on my lower lip as I tried to digest all the info. All I heard was mistake, dying, and wasn’t the first mistake. Where does a person begin?

“What do you mean mistake? To me someone dying is a huge thing to fuck up on. Don’t you think?” I shouted.

“Okay, first off, you can’t yell at me if I can’t yell at you, and second you cuss way too much. I’ve always thought that, you know,” Ross said as he flipped his hair back in a very feminine manner.

Was this guy serious? “Listen here, grandma, if you don’t explain yourself I’m going to want to speak to your boss or manager or some shit like that.” There, that didn’t sound completely absurd or anything.

Breathe, Marie, everything is all right, you’re not crazy. My breaths started rushing in and out of my chest with so much force I thought I might hyperventilate.

“Take deep breaths and calm down. Can’t have you dying on me again.” Ross started to laugh and I narrowed my eyes at him. “Too soon for death jokes?”

“You think?”

“Sorry, you need to lighten up and laugh, because you’re going to be laughing after I explain this whole mix up.” Ross sat up a little straighter and crossed his legs at the knee.

“Okay.” What else could I say? I didn’t know how to get out of this place so listening to Ross was my only option.

“Twenty-five years ago I became a guardian angel. The night I got my wings, I went and celebrated with some other angels. That ceremonial wine has a kick like you wouldn’t believe.” Ross started to laugh but at my lack of amusement, he went on with his story. “Anyway, I overslept my first assignment. See, when we get our wings, we’re given charges to follow from birth to death and you are mine. Actually you’re my only one.”

“You sound bothered by that. Why am I your only one? Are you supposed to have more than one?” This dude sure wasn’t gaining my confidence.

“Well, I made a mistake and until I fix this debacle, I’m stuck with just you. And let’s just say you’re not the most exciting person in the world.”

“Hey! We are talking about your fuck–up, not my boring life. And for the record, my life is so not boring.” I stuck my tongue out at him. Childish? Yes, but I didn’t care.

Her One-Night Prince by Rebecca J. Clark

honp-tourbanner

Her One-Night Prince is a Cinderella story about a woman’s dream to be something she’s not for just one night at her class reunion.

As all fairy tales go, however, happy endings don’t come easily.

Shy and sheltered Lydia St. Clair is uncomfortable around men, so she advertises for a gay man to be her date and revamp her style. Mitch Gannon answers Lydia’s ad and he’s perfect for the job–he’s handsome and, even more important, he’s charming.

Unbeknownst to Lydia, Mitch is straight and answered the ad as the unwitting victim of a practical joke. Before he can reveal the truth, Lydia is convinced he’s her fairy godmother, ready to transform her into the belle of the ball. And Mitch, prince that he is, doesn’t have the heart to set her straight.

EXCERPT:

With a firm hand against her upper back, Mitch propelled Lydia out of the bar and out the door. She peered back through the windows and could just make out that waitress standing behind the bar and staring out at them.

“She’s beautiful,” she said, turning back to Mitch. Something about that woman signaled a déjà vu of sorts in her mind, but she couldn’t quite put a finger on it.

“Who? Edwina?” He glanced into the pub. “Yeah, she is.”

Edwina’s showstopping figure and stunning looks caused Lydia to self-consciously smooth back her boring, pulled-tight-into-a-bun-as-usual hair. She couldn’t imagine a woman like Edwina ever advertising in the gay personals. She couldn’t imagine Edwina making a boob of herself by assuming Mitch worked at a gay bar.

With the heel of her palm, she bonked herself in the side of the head a few times. “Just shoot me, will you?”

Mitch pulled her hand away from her head. “You’re too hard on yourself, Lydia.”

For a moment she zeroed in on the feeling of his large, warm hand holding hers. It felt good, like it belonged there, which was a crazy thought. Reality returned, and she pulled her hand from his grasp.

“What in the world was I thinking?” she asked. Her skin burned from embarrassment, or the heat of summer, or his touch…or all the above.

“It’s understandable you’d assume I worked at a gay bar. I mean, you think I…er…”

She waved her hand back and forth. “No, no. That was just plain stupidity. What I meant was, I had this grand notion of you helping me out and transforming me into the belle of the ball. You know, Queer Eye my style or something.” She wrapped her arms around herself despite the warm air and strode down the alley. If a sinkhole opened up in front of her, she’d gladly fall into it.

He jogged up beside her as they reached the sidewalk. “I don’t know about the clothing and hair stuff,” he said, “but I could certainly give you advice on men.” He cleared his throat and coughed. “I mean, since I’m a, ah, man.”

“That’s okay. It was a dumb idea. Besides, I don’t want advice on men. It would be pointless.” She pulled black-framed sunglasses from her purse and exchanged them for her regular glasses to block the blinding glare off the sidewalk.

Mitch didn’t respond right away, so she knew he silently agreed with her. Finally, he asked, “Why would it be pointless?”

She had about a million reasons. “It just would be.”

Review: Foxe Hunt (Skyler Foxe Mysteries #2)

Title: Foxe Hunt

Series: Skyler Foxe Mysteries #2
Publisher: MLR Press, LLC
Genre: M/M Mystery, Explicit
Release Date: September 9, 2011

High school English teacher Skyler Foxe finally hooks up with gorgeous assistant football coach Keith Fletcher.

But is the man what he seems to be? Skyler still has his doubts when he spies Keith in some shady circumstances. And there are still some unanswered questions as to what exactly is going on at the high school. Who thought high school could be so sinister?

Meanwhile, Skyler’s friends from college have their own problems. Lovers and partners, Evan and Jeff were kicked out of the Army for Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, and the depressed Evan is found dead. Suicide, says the police, but Skyler thinks otherwise. It’s Skyler Foxe on the hunt for a killer once more!

My Thoughts

Foxe Hunt (Skyler Foxe Mysteries #2) is one of the most addictive series I’ve read in a long time. I just love the flawed hero of the stories, Skyler. He’s not your typical murder mystery solving hero, not by any means but even when he’s being annoying and dense – yes, even the great gay teacher Skyler is a twit at times – he more than makes up for it with heart.

The story lines with the teens that he directly works with is a definitely wonderful this for both the kids and him. You see, while Skyler is strong and out in so many ways, he’s not in others and is terrified of losing his job due to his orientation. I can sympathize with this fear as I’ve seen loss played out from such things where the employee did nothing wrong but management decided to get ‘creative’ to find a reason to fire the gay employee. So while I hate his weakness, I find it a very human and normal flaw that he has to work through.

The growth of his little student support group is awesome! Some times teens are the scared, weak (as in fearful not pathetic) children that need to be protected and sometimes they get stubborn and tell the prejudiced world to go to…. And that’s what Rick, Alex, Heather, and Amber did. Between the Gay Straight Alliance at school and finding ways to protect the boys you have to just love ‘em. Oh, and lest we forget the SFC – just love it – they are back and in true form, just not an always useful, supportive, form, lol. Never let your hope-to-be-boyfriend meet your exes without putting muzzles on them first… just sayin’ 😉 Oh, an I so think the no dating within the club rule needs to G. O.

There is an issue of DADT, murder, bashing / hate, and – GASP – Skyler D. A. T. I. N. G! Yes, even the great Skyler succumbs to the idea of dating and love. I was so excited to see how the attempted romance played out that I reread the book before reviewing just to make sure I got to enjoy every part 😉 I just can’t wait for book #3 (Out Foxed), to find out how Skyler deals with the freaky mysteries around Keith and the High School, and to see how she wraps up the trilogy. I truly hope that Ms. Walsh will decide to grace us with Skyler in other adventures beyond this three book story arc – which she has alluded to possibly doing (hope hope hope).

I truly enjoyed the story, the romance, and watching Skyler grow and mature as a man. I continue to love this series thanks to the writing, plot, and wonderful characters. They are real with real issues, lives, and fears, something often glossed over or missing in other series. Skyler is someone you could actually meet, just as he is in the story, at the store, club, or classroom. If you are looking for something hot, steamy, cute, an funny (yes, all those can go together, promise) then please check out Foxe Tail and find out just why Skyler is one of my all time favourite M/M romance hero.

The cast is wonderful, the writing engaging, and the story keeps you guessing and panting throughout! Wash is a fav author that manages to weave a fun, yet painful at times, story that leaves you begging for the next book – Out Foxed – and rooting for Skyler and his whole crew, adult and teen alike. A full five book drops for Skyler and Haley Walsh!
